Witness This: Lebron James is a front-running loser

October 06 , 2007

Wow.  What a moron.  Proof-positive why Lebron James went directly to the NBA instead of college:  he likely couldn't pass a damn class.  When watching TBS's (miserably lousy) coverage of the ALDS (my Cleveland Indians versus the Yankees), they decided to give LeBron an interview.  There he is, sitting in the stands at Jacob's Field in Cleveland--with a New York Yankees cap on.  He went on with some lame excuse--he's friends with Derek Jeter or something like that, and he's "always" been a Yankees fan.

lebronjames First of all, I don't believe that.  LeBron and I grew up at the same time in essentially the same city.  When we were kids, the Indians were incredible.  From 1995 to 2001 (from the time LeBron was 10 until he was 16), the Indians were a perennial contender.  Cleveland was insane about the Indians.  They were in the World Series twice.  Cleveland had two clothing styles:  "F--- Art Modell" shirts and Indians apparel.  Whatever.  Let's pretend that he's actually telling the truth, and for some reason, he was the moron rooting for the Yankees when the Indians were just as good.

It doesn't matter.  He's the face of Cleveland sports.  Hey, LeBron--have you looked around lately?  Have you noticed that Cleveland ain't exactly doing that great?  That the city, with its poor economy, rising crime, and deteriorating downtown, finds a little bit of pride in its sports teams?  That the Indians, Browns, and yes, Cavs, are a source of pride for the city?  Did you notice that for better or for worse, you represent Cleveland?

So, how do you represent it?  You represent it by slapping the face of every Clevelander that paid $100+ for tickets to watch you lose in the playoffs.  Oh, for you and your friend Derek Jeter, that might not be much money, but for the lifelong Cavs fan that might be getting laid off at the Ford plant in Brookpark, it's a real investment.  To them, Cleveland is more than just a place that they collect a paycheck.  It is home.  And people need to have pride in where they live...or they look like a front-running loser (see Figure 1.)

Too bad that front-runners throughout the country can't wear Cavs jerseys--because the Cavs lost.  LeBron lost.  Maybe he should wear a Spurs jersey.

To me, this is a great relief--I never liked LeBron James.  It was great to see him play.  He's a good player.  But a Michael Jordan he isn't.  And for all of the talk of how great it is to see a hometown kid play for the hometown team, who cares?  He probably grew up rooting for the Bulls.  Oh wait--he even said he did.  A true Clevelander indeed.

As for me, I'll be saving my money to buy more tickets for the Indians.  When LeBron leaves the Cavs, maybe I'll be back.

P.S.  The Saturday Night Live episode you were on was hysterical--if by hysterical, you mean "deleted from the Tivo a quarter-way through."  Nice job.
